Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt dub trailer released

Funimation has released their trailer for the English dub of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. The cast includes Jamie Marchi as Panty, Monica Rial as Stocking, Christopher Sabat as Garterbelt, and Joel McDonald as Brief. The dialogue highlighted in the trailer seems pretty good, though I think the dub will have a difficult time holding up to the hilarity of the original Japanese pronunciations and inflections on particular words/phrases. Though I have to say, Chris Sabat as Garterbelt may have been the best decision Funimation could have made with this dub.

  1. Well, as one who was treated to the first two episodes of the dubbed version, I must say that no humorous Engrish cussing could possibly amount to how awesome it is. For you see, with the non-existent Engrish swearing, this dub's humor lies primarily in, well, everything else.

That is to say, everything the dub does to the Japanese version is pretty much the equivalent of what the final battle of the second Gurren Lagann movie did to the final battle of the TV series: remove everything that didn't work, add things that made it more awesome, and take all of its themes and inflate them to unfathomable levels that ultimately dwarf the original version which, while still awesome in its own right, just ends up feeling underwhelming in comparison.

Panty and Stocking are bitchier, Brief is geekier, Garterbelt is black-reverend-y-er, and Chuck is...Chuck. Seriously, it's like they took Chuck's original Japanese actor and made him re-record his dialogue, because he sounds virtually the same. And the swearing...dear mother of all that is good and lucha, the SWEARING! I swear (no pun intended), when the dub decides to get creative with its cussing, calling a possessed sports car "shit pickle" is about the LEAST creative it gets.

All in all, the first two episodes are one big steaming mass of epic WIN. Highly worth a gander even from the doubters, and proof that the English language isn't exclusively cool in anime when it's spoken by Japanese people. Not that there aren't plenty other examples that exist, but hey, people are stubborn.

    1. Glad to hear! I had planned on buying the DVDs when they came out anyways, but that makes me even more excited for it.
