Comic Books Inbound!

On top of my previously-established routine of posting video game and anime reviews and related posts, I will gradually be incorporating my comic book/graphic novel reviews to this blog. These will all be in video format, as opposed to the text-based video game and anime reviews. The reason for this is that I have already recorded many of my comic book/graphic novel reviews and posted them to my YouTube channel, but I feel that, as ‘geek culture’ bleeds over in so many different forms of media, it makes sense to me to begin including these reviews on this blog. That said, this does not mean that I am placing any less priority or care on my video game or anime-related posts. I will likely be posting multiple reviews from my comic book/graphic novel collection to this blog at a time for a while, starting with some of the more recent reviews I have done, and will then slow down the rate of posting these as I get caught up with the backlog of reviews I have already filmed and uploaded.

With all of that in mind, I figured it might be worth mentioning just which comic book storylines I am planning to follow this year (and potentially into the next). First up, I found the first trade paperback volume of Rick Remender’s Black Science to be one of the most fresh and interesting ideas to hit the medium in quite some time. I’m a sucker for old-school science fiction in the vein of Ray Bradbury, and this has a lot of that, plus some crazy dimension-hopping, with a dash of the ‘savage’ and ‘horrific’ thrown in with the classic 'science gone wrong' and 'this is what happens when man tries to play god' repercussions. I will most definitely be picking up the second trade paperback with my next proper comic book haul.

Similarly, I plan on picking up the second volume of the current Captain Marvel series, starring Carol Danvers, who will apparently be dealing with the revelation that her cat is in fact the hundred-egg-laying alien creature that Rocket Raccoon previously tried to convince her it was. The first collection was solid, and I’m trying to get a better feel for the character outside of the Avengers team format. I’ve also preordered Rage of Ultron, as the couple of Marvel Original Graphic Novels I recently read (The Infinity Revelation, Avengers: Endless Wartime) proved solid standalone tales. I also wouldn’t mind taking a look at Angela: Asgard’s Assassin later this Summer, as she was a rather fun, though obviously dark and troubled character during her appearances in the current Guardians of the Galaxy run.

As per usual, I will continue collecting Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova, as those are my two main Marvel reads right now. And tying into that, I do plan to get both the Legendary Star-Lord trade paperback and the Guardians of the Galaxy/All-New X-Men: The Black Vortex later this year. I may, however, be dropping Brian K. Vaughan’s Saga if this next trade paperback collection does not absolutely blow my socks off, as I found the fourth volume rather disappointing on the whole. It will be a while before Saga’s fifth volume releases, as the series took a brief hiatus until just recently, but I’ve basically given it the ultimatum of ‘this next volume needs to be straight-up incredible or I’m leaving it behind'. Vaughan’s other well-known series, Y: The Last Man, certainly hit its lowest point in terms of intrigue around the fourth trade paperback, but it was an awesome ride from there on out. Saga’s most recent outing bored me throughout until the last two issues, but by that point I had lost a great deal of respect for someone who had previously been one of my favorite characters.

Finally, with Marvel's new Secret Wars and shift to Battleworld, there are a few series I have my eye on. I loved the Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee Inhumans limited series, as well as the way Attilan's royal family played into War of Kings, so it may come as little surprise that Inhumans: Attilan Rising sits at the the top of my personal 'most-anticipated' list for these upcoming Marvel stories. And carrying on my obsession with wacky cosmic stories, I'll certainly pick up the new Infinity Gauntlet. I am curious to see how both X-Men '92 and Age of Ultron vs. Marvel Zombies are handled, and will give both of those a shot.

I’ll be posting three reviews this afternoon (directly after I post this little update, in fact). After that, expect a few more reviews every couple of days or so, in no particular order aside from me trying to present a nice variety to work with.

Anime review: Iron Man

Quite some time has passed since Tony Stark made his identity as Iron Man public, and now he hopes to bring free renewable energy to nations around the globe by building arc reactors on a much broader scale. One such nation to see the installation of an arc reactor is Japan. Stark sets up shop - a little home away from home - to oversee the final stages of the arc reactor's completion. He also wants to test out new Iron Man Dio armor suits, which will be worn by younger pilots, as he seemingly intends to retire his career as Iron Man once his plans with the arc reactor have been completed.

However, the honeymoon status only lasts so long, and the Iron Man Dio suits are overridden by some outside force. They leave Stark's lab and as he attempts to track them down he comes face to face with the first robotic member of Zodiac. Stark quickly realizes there is something larger at play than he originally anticipated, and both ghosts from his past and new threats will face him before the record is set straight in Japan.

In typical fashion, Madhouse has done a knockout job with the animation. There is a great blend of 2D animation with cel-shaded 3D models that help bring out more dynamic panorama views and action-packed fight sequences. The Iron Man suit itself has plenty of detail up close, and the energy blasts from his palms look cool each time he fires them off. Aside from peeling back layers of the Zodiac mystery, Tony Stark spends his time in Japan constantly crossing paths with a peppy (if not unlucky and mildly annoying) reporter named Nanami and trying to seduce his head researcher Dr. Chika Tanaka. Neither one of these subplots is particularly well-written, and might have better been scripted as minor side stories for a single episode. Instead, they tend to bog down the fun and excitement in Iron Man with sappy melodrama.

The anime is full of cliché subplots that could easily fit into any other generic anime if you were to remove Iron Man from the lead role. A few of the overarching storylines that run for multiple episodes are interesting enough, and Tony Stark's past as well as his friendship/rivalry with handsome Japanese hero Captain Nagato Sakurai help to best develop him as a character. Sakurai and Stark are the most well-rounded characters in the show, while the major villains are guided by boring and highly illogical ideologies. The Zodiac suits are there more or less to beat Iron Man senseless before the superhero eventually gathers his bearings and they are blown up in spectacular fashion The show seems to forget just where it was planning to go originally, as the final episodes are a huge departure from the introductory ones.

The dialogue ranges from halfway decent to bland and uninspired. One brief appearance by Wolverine acts as a plug for Marvel and Madhouse's other anime works, but this story is otherwise concerned entirely with Iron Man. The story is at its best when it runs a plot line over the course of a few episodes, building up the tension and sense of intrigue. As a whole, it is not particularly well-scripted, but there have also been far worse offenders in the field of tie-in anime projects. This is an anime aimed strictly at Iron Man and Marvel fans, and does not rank particularly close to the quality of the comic books and movie franchise that inspired it.

My rating: 6.75 (out of 10)

Deadpool video game announced

High Moon Studios, the developers of Transformers: War for Cybertron, are making a Deadpool video game. Based on what little footage is presented in this trailer, it looks like a sort of action brawler, not unlike Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham Asylum, though Deadpool is more reliant on his guns and katanas. I will need to see significantly more gameplay before I make any sort of call on whether I feel this game merits a purchase, but High Moon certainly has Deadpool's style and humor nailed down. I hope they find some creative ways to have Deadpool break the fourth wall - he was plenty entertaining in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but it would be great to see him go all out in his own game.

Jafax 15 - Day two

The second day of Jafax was much heavier on panels than day one, but there were still plenty of anime showings, games/competitions, and ongoing events over the course of the day to cater to all sorts of different tastes. The costume contest at the end of the day showcased some of the most creative and highly-detailed costumes at the event, but I was thoroughly impressed with basically every costumed attendee I encountered this weekend.

I picked up a copy of the Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles dvd as well as FLCL poster from two of the vendors at Jafax 15. This was a great experience and I am pumped to go back next year (though I do plan on putting my costume together a bit sooner than the day before the convention).

(Below are some pictures taken over the course of the day on Sunday - click to make the images bigger.)

Jafax 15 - Day one (in brief)

Today was the first day of Jafax 15, an anime/comic/video game convention hosted at Grand Valley State University. I went dressed as Lt. Quattro of Zeta Gundam, while my brother went as Edward Elric. There were some crazy and most excellent costumes on display over the course of the day, and it was impressive to see what people could whip up out of homemade materials. Admist the scheduled events, I talked briefly with Tiffany Grant (the voice of Asuka in the English dub of Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as many other roles in various anime) and she signed my copy of disc 3 from the NGE Platinum Perfect Collection. I am planning on going back tomorrow for more Japanese subculture fun and I might post some more entries/photos from the event here.
